West Dean College has an international reputation for excellence in practice-based education in conservation and creative arts with a specific focus on craft skills. The College’s programmes range from introductory short courses to degrees at post graduate level arranged into two academic Schools; Arts and Conservation.
To support the programmes the College has an extensive range of technical resources and workshops which are used by staff and students seven days a week. The College is part of The Edward James Foundation, a charitable educational trust located on the 6,400 acre West Dean Estate in beautiful West Sussex countryside near Chichester.
As part of an ambitious 10 year strategic plan, the College has recently reviewed its approach to managing technical resources and support, aiming to create a consistent approach for students and staff across a diverse range of existing studios, workshops and IT, ensuring best practice in terms of health and safety. The College is seeking to recruit a new Safety Technician to lead in this area.
Reporting to the Head of Technical Resources you will take a leading role ensuring that teaching and workshop spaces and the processes carried out within them are compliant with current health and safety legislation and best sector practice. You will contribute to the induction and training of staff and students in relation to specialist processes, equipment and safe working practices to enable independent use of workshops and studios promoting a positive health and safety culture. Additionally, you will be responsible for administering the Health and Safety system, ensuring all policies and processes are implemented and contribute to its review.
To be successful in this role you will have recent and relevant experience of overseeing health and safety in a workshop environment ideally within an educational context. You will have excellent communication and negotiation skills and a positive attitude to facilitating creative work. You will have experience of record keeping including accident reporting and the preparation of and review of risk assessments.
