Job Description

University of Nottingham - Life Sciences

Location:Nottingham
Salary:£27,511 to £32,817 per annum
Hours:Full Time
Contract Type:Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On:16th February 2021
Closes:26th February 2021

Closing Date: Friday 26 February 2021

The Synthetic Biology Research Centre (SBRC) at the University of Nottingham is seeking creative and motivated metabolic engineering scientists and/or synthetic biologists to work on developing gas-fermenting microbial chassis for sustainable bioproduction of chemicals and fuels using microbial fuel cells (MFCs).

SBRC Nottingham, was established by BBSRC/EPSRC. It originally received grant funding of £14.3M and has just received extension funding of £3m. It is working at the frontiers of UK academic and industrial research with the aim to accelerate the application of Engineering and Synthetic Biology technologies to directly capture carbon by exploiting the ability of autotrophic bacteria to fix C1-gases (carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide or methane) and convert them into hydrocarbon platform chemicals including hydrocarbons carboxylic acids and biopolymers. The gas-fermenting aerobic and anaerobic bacterial chassis are being used as primary engineering platforms.

Candidates must hold a PhD or be near to completion of a PhD or studying towards a PhD or equivalent in a discipline relevant to Synthetic Biology or Biochemical Engineering.

Applicants must be able to demonstrate knowledge and experience of bioreactor design, experience of metabolic engineering, ideally through the use of bio-parts, in-silico design and analytics as well as evidence of sufficient breadth or depth of research methodologies and techniques to work in Synthetic Biology.

This full-time fixed-term post is available for six months. Job share arrangements may be considered.
