This post will be based at both the Canterbury and Medway campuses.

Kent Business School (KBS) is seeking to appoint a Deputy Dean to oversee staffing matters (including EDI, probation and mentoring, RPD, staff development, workload allocation, and liaison with the Division’s UCU representatives), and contribute to the development of academic strategy and planning. You will represent the School in the absence of the Dean. This appointment includes an underlying substantive and on-going post of Professor in the Kent Business School. This underlying post is the one to which, subject to renewal of this Associate Dean appointment, the role-holder will return at the end of the three year tenure. Candidates for the Associate Dean role will be fully research active academics and will continue being research active while holding the role.

You will be a member of the School’s Senior Management Team (SMT) (in which capacity the role-holder will work closely with the Dean, the School’s Director of Operations, and the other SMT members). This role carries a high level of autonomy and responsibility; the role-holder will possess the skills to lead, inspire, and, working closely with the Dean, identify the need for change and establish clear goals for the School. The ability to work effectively with colleagues is essential. Upon appointment, the role-holder will agree a set of aims and objectives with the Dean, with regular meetings thereafter. You will commit to their own staff development and training to support the delivery of their duties, and they will ensure a smooth and effective handover at the end of the term of office.

As Deputy Dean (Planning and People) you will:

  • Provide strategic and operation management of academic staff
  • Lead on career development for academic staff
  • Oversee the allocation of workload to academic staff
  • Serve on relevant committees and panels

To succeed in this role you will have:

  • A PhD in a relevant area (or equivalent professional qualification)
  • Knowledge and awareness of the broad context of Higher Education and government policy in the UK the current and forthcoming challenges and opportunities it presents.
  • Substantial experience of budget planning and of financial management
  • Substantial experience in Human Resources issues and of handling cultural change
