Job Summary

Your main duties will be to support the ongoing review of the Department’s undergraduate curriculum, including the design and delivery of teaching of Statistics modules for the Department.

In academic year 19/20, the Department of Mathematics began the delivery of a new UG curriculum. In addition, current MSC curricula are under review and refinement.  You will play an important role in continuing the development of this curricula. Support for curriculum review will involve liaison between the Department’s curriculum review group, Imperial’s Educational Development Unit, and Strategic Teaching Fellows from other disciplines, to re-design and develop the teaching of statistics within the Department.

You will assist with the development of innovative forms of pedagogy within the Department. Teaching associated to the post includes the delivery of Statistics modules to both mathematics undergraduates and MSc level students, and ancillary applied statistics modules. You will provide teaching cover for up to ten hours a week of lectures and classes taught by the Statistics Section of the Department of Mathematics.  You will also carry out personal tutoring and project supervision work within the Department of Mathematics.

Essential requirements

  • A degree, or equivalent with substantial Mathematics and Statistics and components
  • Have completed (or are nearing completion of) a PhD in Statistics or Mathematics
  • To have, or to be working towards, a recognised teaching qualification, or to be able to demonstrate experience in a formal teaching environment
  • Have potential for and willingness to work towards appropriate professional recognition and accreditation e.g. Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (HEA)
  • Recent experience and proven competence of teaching or tutoring in Statistics at an undergraduate level
  • Recent experience of teaching or tutoring in statistics, and an ability to demonstrate the potential to teach university level Mathematics effectively and enthusiastically at an introductory undergraduate level. Experience of promoting effective learning and interaction with students
  • A specialist knowledge of statistics, or closely related field, and of teaching methods and techniques within the field of mathematics.
  • Familiarity with a variety of strategies to promote and assess teaching
  • Experience of and a demonstrable ability to teach up to MSc level effectively in a variety of teaching situations
  • Proven competence in teaching
  • Experience of promoting effective learning
  • Experience of effective interaction with students
  • An ability to motivate students from all disciplines in the study of Statistics
  • Proven ability to demonstrate initiative
  • Ability to develop familiarity with a variety of strategies to promote and assess teaching
